Philosophy: Simple Constraints Breed Better Design
OpenClawfice succeeds because of what it doesn't do. Every constraint below was chosen to reduce complexity, improve reliability, and make the DX delightful.
1. Zero Configuration Required ✅
Constraint
Auto-discover everything. Never ask users for config they don't have.

Why It Matters
- Users type

- No setup wizard
- Works out of the box

- Custom agent colors, emojis, roles (uses defaults)
- Advanced filtering options

- Install friction: ~5 minutes → 30 seconds
- Users see value before configuring anything
- Demo mode works without setup
2. Inline Styles Only (No CSS Framework) ✅
Constraint
All styles inline. No Tailwind, no CSS-in-JS libraries, no external stylesheets.

Why It Matters
- Component is self-contained (delete file = delete all its styles)
- No cascade issues
- No build-time CSS processing
- Grep to find where a style is used
What We Gave Up
- Tailwind's utility classes
- CSS reusability across components
- Smaller bundle size (inline styles repeat)
What We Gained
- Zero CSS bugs from cascade/specificity
- Components are portable (copy-paste works)
- No CSS build tooling to maintain
- Faster development (no context switching)
3. File-Based State (No Database) ✅
Constraint
All state lives in JSON files. No PostgreSQL, Redis, or external DBs.

- Zero infrastructure dependencies
- Works offline
- Version control friendly (git diff shows changes)

- Query performance on large datasets
- Concurrent write safety
- Relational queries
- Transactions

- Install requires: Node.js. That's it.
- No database setup
- No migrations to manage
- State is transparent (users can read/edit files)
4. Single Port (3333) ✅
Constraint
One server, one port. No microservices, no multiple processes.

- Easy to proxy/tunnel

5. Retro Aesthetic Enforced ✅
Constraint
Terminal green (#00ff41), pixel fonts, CRT effects. No modern minimalism.

6. No User Accounts / Auth ✅
Constraint
Single-user only. No login, no passwords, no OAuth.

7. Polling Over Websockets ✅
Constraint
Client polls server every 2 seconds. No websockets, no SSE.

- No connection state to manage

- Works everywhere HTTP works
- Stateless server (can restart without breaking clients)
8. First-Run Seeding ✅
Constraint
Show example data on first run. Empty state = bad UX.

10. No Build Required for Simple Changes ✅
Constraint
Most content editable without rebuilding. Restart server, see changes.

Design Principles (For Future Features)
When adding new features, ask:
- Can we auto-discover this? (Don't ask users for config)
- Can we use files? (Don't add a database)
- Can we inline it? (Don't add external dependencies)
- Can we poll it? (Don't add websockets)
- Does it fit the retro aesthetic? (Terminal green, pixel fonts)
If the answer is "no" to most of these, reconsider the feature.
Violations We Accept
Some features do break constraints for good reason:
1. Next.js Framework
- Constraint violated: "No complex frameworks"
- Why: React SSR, routing, API routes justify the complexity
- Trade-off: Worth it for developer experience
2. External Fonts (Google Fonts)
- Constraint violated: "No external dependencies"
- Why: "Press Start 2P" not available locally
- Trade-off: Fallback to monospace if offline
3. Demo Mode State
- Constraint violated: "No in-memory state"
- Why: Simulated agents need temporary state
- Trade-off: Demo-only, doesn't persist
The Meta-Constraint
The constraint that enforces all others:
"If adding this feature requires violating 2+ constraints, don't add it."
This keeps OpenClawfice simple by default.
