**Problem**: JavaScript syntax error "string literal contains an unescaped line break" when inserting Bible verses

**Root Cause Analysis**:
1. Bible API (bible-api.com) returns verse text containing actual line breaks (\n, \r)
2. Line breaks in JavaScript template literals and string concatenation caused syntax errors
3. Multiple template literals throughout create-article.html needed conversion
4. CORS issues with Articles API due to missing dependencies in deployment package

**Troubleshooting Steps Performed**:
1. **Initial Fix Attempt**: Replaced onclick attributes with data attributes - FAILED
2. **Template Literal Removal**: Systematically removed all template literals from JavaScript - PARTIAL SUCCESS
3. **DOM Element Creation**: Switched to programmatic DOM element creation - PARTIAL SUCCESS
4. **String Concatenation**: Converted all template literals to string concatenation - PARTIAL SUCCESS
5. **Cache Bypass**: Created create-article-v2.html with different approach - FAILED
6. **API Investigation**: Identified Bible API returning unescaped line breaks - ROOT CAUSE FOUND

**Final Resolution**:
1. **Backend Fix**: Modified Articles API `get_bible_verse()` function to clean verse text:
   - Remove line breaks: `.replace('\n', ' ').replace('\r', ' ')`
   - Normalize whitespace: `' '.join(verse_text.split())`
   - Strip extra spaces: `.strip()`

2. **Deployment Fix**: Recreated Lambda deployment package with all dependencies:
   - Included requests, urllib3, certifi, charset_normalizer, idna modules
   - Fixed CORS headers to always return properly
   - Added error handling for missing dependencies

3. **JavaScript Cleanup**: Removed all template literals from create-article.html:
   - Converted fetch URLs to string concatenation
   - Replaced template literal variables with string concatenation
   - Ensured no backticks remain in JavaScript code

**Technical Details**:

- **Issue 2: Cancelled Subscription Showing Free Tier**
  - **Problem**: After cancellation, subscription immediately showed as "Free" instead of retaining premium benefits until billing period ends
  - **Root Cause**: Cancellation logic downgraded tier immediately instead of maintaining benefits until next_billing_date
  - **Fix**: Modified get_subscription_status to show "active" status and maintain premium tier until billing date passes
  - **Status**: ✅ FIXED - Users retain premium benefits until billing period expires

- **Issue 3: No Automatic Subscription Downgrade**
  - **Problem**: No mechanism to automatically downgrade expired subscriptions after billing period ends
  - **Root Cause**: Missing scheduled task to process expired subscriptions
  - **Fix**: Implemented automated system with process_expired_subscriptions() function and CloudWatch Events rule running daily at midnight UTC
  - **Status**: ✅ IMPLEMENTED - Automatic downgrades occur daily

- **Issue 4: PayPal Sandbox Cancellation Errors**
  - **Problem**: PayPal RESOURCE_NOT_FOUND errors when cancelling sandbox subscriptions
  - **Root Cause**: PayPal sandbox subscriptions often don't exist when trying to cancel
  - **Fix**: Enhanced error handling to gracefully handle missing PayPal subscriptions and proceed with local cancellation
  - **Status**: ✅ FIXED - Cancellation works regardless of PayPal sandbox state

## Video Thumbnail Sizing Fix ✅ COMPLETE (January 2025)

### Issue Summary
**Problem**: Video thumbnails displaying at incorrect sizes on live site (christianconservativestoday.com) despite working correctly locally.

**Symptoms**:
- Initial: Thumbnails showing at full resolution (1280x720) instead of 200px height
- After first fix: Thumbnails stretched to 1116x200 (wrong aspect ratio)
- After second fix: Thumbnails centered with black bars on sides (1140x1158 container)
- After third fix: Thumbnails back to 1116x200 stretched

### Root Cause Analysis
**Problem**: CSS conflict between inline styles in videos.html and external card-styles.css
- `card-styles.css` had `.thumbnail-container { padding-top: 56.25%; }` creating 16:9 aspect ratio container
- Inline `!important` rules in videos.html were not sufficient to override external stylesheet
- Local version worked because it wasn't loading card-styles.css from S3

### Technical Details
**Conflicting CSS**:

**Lesson Learned**: When external stylesheets conflict with inline styles, fix the external stylesheet at the source rather than fighting with `!important` overrides.

**Testing Gap**: Local testing didn't catch the issue because local version wasn't loading card-styles.css from S3. Always test with production asset URLs.

## Private Article Visibility Fix ✅ COMPLETE (January 2025)

### Issue Summary
**Problem**: Users unable to view their own private articles despite being logged in as the article author.

### Root Cause
**Backend**: API Gateway normalizing Authorization header to lowercase, Lambda checking uppercase only
**Frontend**: Permission check comparing email with author name instead of author_email field

### Resolution
**Backend Fix** (articles_api/index.py):
- Updated extract_user_from_token() to check both 'Authorization' and 'authorization' headers
