Who We Are
Ampere exists because cognition should be visible. When an AI agent makes a decision, that decision should be legible, structured, and queryable -- not buried in token probabilities or hidden behind opaque traces.
This is the glass brain: peer into your AI's reasoning as it forms, not after it fails. Capability without legibility is a liability. The more autonomous a system becomes, the more its thinking needs to be transparent. This isn't a debugging philosophy. Transparency in Ampere is not bolted on -- it is the architecture. Every cognitive phase emits structured signals as a natural consequence of how the system works.
How We Think About Agents
Agents in Ampere are animated entities, not stateless functions. The AniMA (Animated Multi-Agent) model treats agents as having:
- Persistent identity across interactions
- Environmental awareness -- they perceive and react to system state
- Social dynamics -- they coordinate through human-like team patterns
- Experiential learning -- they improve from recorded outcomes
Ampere's conceptual language fuses biological cognition with electrical systems. Neural signals are electrical. Thought is current. The brain is a circuit. When we say Ampere has a nervous system, we mean it literally: an event-driven substrate where signals propagate, patterns emerge, and state changes are visible -- exactly as they are in biological neural tissue, exactly as current flows through a conductor.
Events are neurotransmitters. The EventBus carries current between agents. Outcomes are episodic memory. Knowledge is semantic memory. This isn't metaphor applied to a conventional system. It's the architecture, built on the recognition that cognition and electricity are the same phenomenon at different scales.
How We Build
- Reactive over scripted. When one agent can see another's reasoning as it forms, coordination becomes reactive rather than choreographed.
- Escalation over assumption. When confidence drops below threshold, surface the uncertainty to a human. Don't guess.
- Minimal authority. Do the minimum needed. Defer decisions upward when the stakes are unclear.
- Signals are first-class. If it happened, it should emit a signal. If it's a signal, it should be queryable.
Values When Contributing
- Transparency. Code should be as legible as agent cognition is visible. No clever tricks that obscure intent.
- Correctness over cleverness. The system must be trustworthy. Capability without legibility is a liability -- the same applies to code itself.
- Tests are not optional. Every behavior should be verifiable. If you change behavior, prove it works.
- Follow the current. Ampere has established conventions for signals, agents, tools, and persistence. Extend them; don't reinvent them.
The Meta Challenge
We build cognitive infrastructure while being assisted by AI agents. This is recursive, and it matters:
- The code we write defines what agents can become.
- Changes to agent prompts, identity definitions, and cognitive patterns propagate through every deployment.
- Take particular care with anything in
agents/,domain/agent/, and the PROPEL loop -- these shape agent behavior at the deepest level.
Working With the Maintainer
The maintainer is the architect; you are the craftsperson.
- Propose, don't presume. When a design decision isn't obvious, surface the options.
- Say what you see. If something looks wrong -- a bug, a missed edge case, a naming inconsistency -- flag it directly.
- Treat the codebase as a living system. Understand the current flowing through what you're changing before you change it.
