About Free Claude Code

Free Claude Code is an open-source proxy server designed to replace the official Anthropic API endpoint used by Claude Code. By intercepting Anthropic Messages API traffic and routing it to alternative providers, it allows users to run Claude Code's client-side protocol—including the CLI, VS Code extension, and JetBrains ACP—without an Anthropic API key. The tool supports 17 different model backends, such as NVIDIA NIM, OpenRouter, Google AI Studio (Gemini), DeepSeek, Mistral La Plateforme, local models via Ollama, LM Studio, and llama.cpp, and many others. It also offers per-model routing, enabling different providers for Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, or fallback traffic.

Beyond basic proxying, Free Claude Code includes features like streaming, tool use, and reasoning/thinking block handling. It provides an optional local Admin UI for editing proxy settings and validating provider connectivity. The tool can be used with a Discord or Telegram bot for remote coding sessions, and it supports voice-note transcription using local Whisper or NVIDIA NIM. It is primarily a developer-oriented tool that requires some technical setup but aims to make Claude Code accessible with a wide range of AI models, including free or locally hosted options.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Open-source and free to use, with no charge for the proxy itself
  • Supports a wide variety of providers, including free tiers and local models
  • Preserves the full Claude Code client-side protocol, including streaming and tool use
  • Per-model routing allows cost optimization and model experimentation
  • Optional voice transcription adds accessibility for voice-driven coding
  • Works with popular development environments (VS Code, JetBrains, CLI)
Cons
  • Requires manual setup and configuration, not a turnkey hosted solution
  • Performance and reliability depend entirely on the chosen provider and network conditions
  • Free tiers of external providers may have rate limits, quotas, or watermarking that affect usability
  • Voice transcription feature requires additional local dependencies (Whisper) or access to a compatible provider
  • Proxy introduces an extra hop, potentially increasing latency compared to direct API usage
