Pros & Cons

Pros
  • No need for large-scale labeled 3D datasets
  • Leverages powerful pretrained 2D diffusion models
  • Generated 3D models are coherent and relightable
  • Supports diverse text prompts and produces high-fidelity results
Cons
  • Currently a research project, not a readily deployable commercial tool
  • May require significant computational resources (not explicitly stated but implied by use of large models)
  • Optimization process may be slow (inferred from gradient descent over NeRF)

FAQ

How does DreamFusion work?
DreamFusion uses a text-to-image generative model called Imagen to optimize a 3D scene. It proposes Score Distillation Sampling (SDS), a way to generate samples from a diffusion model by optimizing a loss function. SDS allows optimization in an arbitrary parameter space (e.g., 3D) as long as there is a differentiable mapping back to images. DreamFusion uses a 3D scene parameterization similar to Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) for this mapping and adds regularizers to improve geometry.
