Cursor vs Windsurf in 2026: The Comparison Just Got a Lot More Interesting

According to DevTools Review's hands-on testing across 11 AI coding tools, most "Cursor vs Windsurf" writeups are already out of date in two ways that change the framing entirely: Windsurf isn't called Windsurf anymore, and Cursor isn't independent anymore. Here's the actual comparison, six months of daily use, plus the two facts everyone's search results are missing.

What changed since this comparison was written

Cursor's maker, Anysphere, was acquired by SpaceX in an all-stock deal reported at $60B. That deal closed on August 14, 2026 — Cursor is now a wholly-owned subsidiary under SpaceX's new "SpaceXAI" division. Pricing is unaffected so far, but "the scrappy AI editor startup" framing you'll see in most comparisons is no longer accurate.

Windsurf was rebranded to Devin Desktop by Cognition on June 2, 2026 (windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai). The Cascade agent discussed below is now called Devin Local. Pricing also moved: Pro rose from $15/month to $20/month — exactly matching Cursor Pro, so the "Windsurf is cheaper" argument that used to decide this comparison for price-sensitive developers no longer holds. Teams is now $40/user/month plus an $80/month base fee, not a flat $30/user/month.

With that out of the way, here's what we found actually using both editors daily for six months on the same three projects: a Next.js SaaS app, a Python data pipeline, and a Rust CLI.

Autocomplete: not close

Cursor's Tab completion is the best in the industry. We typed export const getOrderById = in an Express API and hit Tab — it generated the complete handler: parameter extraction, Zod validation, the service call, error handling, response mapping, correct HTTP status codes. Thirteen lines, matching our existing patterns exactly. Multi-line completions were immediately usable 68-72% of the time; single-line hit ~90%.

Windsurf/Devin Desktop's autocomplete is competent but conservative — closer to Copilot than to Cursor. Its "Supercomplete" feature is genuinely clever (after we changed a function signature, it proactively suggested updating the call sites), but raw completion velocity is well behind Cursor's.

Agentic workflows: Devin Local fights back

This is where the now-renamed Cascade/Devin Local wins outright. We asked it to "add Redis-based rate limiting to all public API routes with a sliding window algorithm, respecting the existing middleware chain, with tests." It read the route files, built the middleware, wired in env vars, applied it across every public route, wrote five integration tests, ran them, found two failures, fixed the config, and re-ran until green — about three and a half minutes for something that would've taken us 45-60 minutes by hand.

Cursor's Composer/Agent mode produced comparable code quality but stayed more step-by-step, presenting diffs for review rather than autonomously closing the loop on failing tests. That control has real value — fewer runaway edits — but Devin Local is the more fire-and-forget agent when a task is clearly scoped.

Codebase understanding: Cursor's edge holds up

On a 150k-line TypeScript monorepo, we asked both tools about the error-handling strategy. Cursor correctly identified that the api module and worker module used two different approaches and asked which to follow. Windsurf/Devin Desktop blended the three approaches it found into a single Frankenstein hybrid. Cursor's @mention system — pointing it at a specific OpenAPI spec — also produced near-production-ready output where the automatic context alone was merely reasonable.

The corrected pricing picture

• Cursor: Free (2,000 completions), Pro $20/month, Teams $40/user/month.
• Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf): Free, Pro $20/month (up from $15), Teams $40/user/month plus an $80/month base fee (up from a flat $30/user/month).

The price gap that used to tilt this decision toward Windsurf for budget-conscious developers is gone. This is now a pure feature-and-workflow decision, not a price decision.

The honest verdict

Choose Cursor if you want the best autocomplete available, work on large established codebases where precise context retrieval matters, and prefer reviewing changes before they land — doubly relevant now that it ships with SpaceXAI's resources behind it.

Choose Devin Desktop if you want an agent that takes a clearly-scoped task and runs it end-to-end with minimal supervision — Devin Local completes well-defined tasks faster, even if it occasionally loops on ambiguous ones.
