AMD and Anthropic strike $5 billion AI infrastructure deal

AMD has announced a major investment in Anthropic, committing up to $5 billion to help expand the AI company's computing capabilities. The announcement came on Wednesday and was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

As part of the new partnership, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 AI GPUs. These GPUs will be integrated using AMD's new Helios rack-scale system.

Deployment timeline and existing partnerships

The companies plan to deploy the first gigawatt of computing power in the first half of 2027. This deal builds on a series of recent data center agreements Anthropic has made with other companies.

Anthropic has previously reached data center deals with SpaceX and TeraWulf. The company has also signed AI infrastructure agreements with Google, Broadcom, and Amazon. There are rumors that Anthropic could reach a similar agreement with Meta as well.

Engineering collaboration and Claude integration

Beyond the infrastructure investment, AMD and Anthropic will launch a multi-year engineering collaboration. Under this arrangement, AMD will use Anthropic's Claude AI model across its software development, engineering, and product development processes.

Tom Brown, Anthropic's cofounder and chief compute officer, commented on the partnership in a press release. "By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude," Brown said.
