Anthropic Leases Large London Office to Quadruple Staff
Anthropic has taken a 158,000 square foot office in London. This space can hold 800 people. That marks four times the company's current 200-person headcount in the city. The expansion happens as disputes with the US government intensify.
Growth in Europe's AI Hub
The firm aims to boost its research and sales efforts across Europe. Its new location sits in the same area as Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Meta, Wayve, Isomorphic Labs, and Synthesia. Various AI research groups also operate nearby. Anthropic first set up in London back in 2023.
This positions the company to compete for graduates from UK universities. The office offers enough room to surpass OpenAI's recent growth plans in the city. OpenAI itself just revealed its own expansion there.
"Europe's largest businesses and fastest-growing startups are choosing Claude, and we're scaling to match," said Pip White, head of EMEA North at Anthropic. "The UK combines ambitious enterprises and institutions that understand what's at stake with AI safety with an exceptional pool of AI talent. We want to be where all of that comes together."
Anthropic builds AI systems with a strong focus on safety. The company launched in 2021, led by former OpenAI leaders like CEO Dario Amodei. Its Claude models rival offerings from OpenAI's GPT series. Claude powers tools for businesses worldwide, emphasizing reliable and secure performance.
London's tech scene draws global players. Google DeepMind started in the UK in 2010 before Google bought it in 2014. The area now hosts a dense group of AI firms, aiding quick exchanges of ideas and talent.
Push from UK Officials Amid US Tensions
UK government figures reportedly urged Anthropic to grow in London. This followed a rift with the US administration. Anthropic declined to let its models support mass surveillance or autonomous weapons. That choice sparked an active court fight with the Pentagon.

Stronger Links with UK AI Safety Body
Anthropic plans to increase cooperation with the UK's AI Security Institute. This government agency just issued a risk assessment for Claude Mythos Preview, Anthropic's newest model. Politico reports the UK as one of Europe's few with access. Anthropic shares the model only with trusted groups due to fears of misuse by cybercriminals.
The AI Security Institute tests frontier models for risks. Its review of Claude Mythos Preview checks potential harms. Anthropic values such partnerships to align development with public safety.
Claude Mythos Preview represents the latest in Anthropic's lineup. The company limits releases to control spread and study impacts. Cybercrime worries include uses in fraud or attacks.
Forming a Key AI District
AI firms clustering in this London spot helps turn research into real products, according to Geraint Rees. He serves as vice-provost at University College London. The campus lies just steps from the new office.
"This cluster didn't emerge from a planning document. It grew because serious researchers and companies understand that proximity isn't a nice-to-have," Rees noted last month at an event. "That's how the innovation system actually works. It's not a clean, linear transfer from lab to market. It's messier, richer, more human than that."
University College London trains top AI experts. Proximity speeds collaborations. No central plan created this hub. Instead, companies and academics chose the area for its benefits. This setup mirrors Silicon Valley's early days, where nearness fueled breakthroughs.
Anthropic's step strengthens London's role as an AI center. It draws talent and investment while balancing growth with safety checks.
