Anthropic's Mythos Model May Reconcile with US Government

Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei reportedly met White House officials amid tensions with the Trump administration. The company's new Claude Mythos Preview cybersecurity model has drawn interest from government agencies testing its capabilities. This comes after a dispute over AI use in surveillance and weapons, with major firms like Apple and Nvidia already using the tool.

Anthropic's Mythos Model May Reconcile with US Government

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei reportedly visited the White House on Friday. This meeting signals possible thawing in relations with the Trump administration. The company faces nearly two months of conflict, including public labels like "RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY" packed with "Leftwing nut jobs" and seen as a national security threat. Now, Anthropic's Claude Mythos Preview, a cybersecurity tool, appears to shift dynamics.

Dispute Roots in February Standoff

Ties between Anthropic and the Pentagon deteriorated in late February. The firm held firm against two demands: deploying its AI for domestic mass surveillance or lethal fully autonomous weapons lacking human oversight. Previously, the Department of Defense relied heavily on Anthropic's technology. Anthropic became the first to gain approval for its models on classified military networks.

The impasse triggered social media barbs, a "supply chain risk" label for Anthropic, and a lawsuit from the company challenging that tag. A temporary injunction paused the ban. Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives including Dario Amodei, prioritizes AI safety and has built Claude as a competitive alternative to models like GPT.

Mythos Preview Enters the Picture

Anthropic launched Claude Mythos Preview with emphasis on its strengths. The model detects security flaws in nearly all major web browsers and operating systems. Company officials call it their strongest model to date, limited to private access now.

It targets critical vulnerabilities in key internet systems. Firms such as Apple, Nvidia, and JPMorgan Chase have committed to using it for fixes before exploits occur. The rollout prompted urgent sessions between top US bank executives and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

Anthropic noted ongoing talks with US government officials on Mythos Preview's offensive and defensive cyber features. Earlier this month, Dianne Penn, head of product management, told The Verge the firm briefed senior officials on Mythos capabilities. She affirmed commitment to collaboration across government levels but withheld briefed parties' names.

Government Eyes the Technology

The Trump administration shows interest. Axios reported Amodei scheduled a session with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles that Friday. A negotiation source called it "grossly irresponsible for the U.S. government to deprive itself of the technological leaps that the new model presents" and labeled access denial "a gift to China."

Some US intelligence community segments, plus the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency under Homeland Security, test Mythos Preview. Other departments and agencies express interest.

Anthropic recently brought on Ballard Partners, a lobbying group connected to Trump. This move fuels speculation of a White House deal.

Path to Broader Integration?

Should Amodei attend and the talks advance Claude's role in agencies, the DoD might adjust its stance. Such an outcome would quietly resolve the security clash. The administration has reversed positions abruptly before.

Anthropic, valued at billions and backed by Amazon and Google investments, navigates policy pressures while advancing AI tools. Mythos Preview positions it as a cyber defense asset amid global threats from state actors like China.
