Anthropic updates Claude voice mode with Opus, Sonnet, Haiku models

Anthropic has refreshed its voice mode for the Claude AI assistant, giving users the ability to pick from three different models. The company announced on Thursday that people can now choose between Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models when using voice interactions.

Claude's voice mode first launched last year and was powered solely by the Haiku model. While Haiku provided quick responses, it was not well suited for more complex tasks. With this update, Anthropic said the voice mode will automatically select the last model a person used in text chat and deploy its fastest version by default.

Expanded capabilities and app integrations

The new voice mode is designed to handle longer conversations. Anthropic said it can help users with tasks such as receiving feedback on their communication style, talking through a client pitch, and brainstorming product market research.

A key difference from rival offerings is that Claude's voice mode can now connect with external applications. Users can tap into Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion through voice commands. This means someone could ask Claude to update a meeting slot, draft an email, or create a document in Notion without typing.

This marks a notable contrast with OpenAI's voice mode, which recently updated its conversational style but still lacks the ability to use different tools to get work done.

Multilingual support and availability

Earlier this year, Anthropic introduced multilingual support for Claude's voice mode in beta. The company said users can now speak in various languages, though they must manually specify which language they want to use. Supported languages include English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), and Spanish (Latin America and Spain).

The updated voice mode is available to all users in beta across platforms. Free users, however, are restricted to using the Haiku model and can only connect one app at a time.

No changes to voice model itself

Anthropic did not make any changes to the underlying voice model with this release. The company has not detailed what kind of voice stack it uses. This means that unlike OpenAI's latest release, users may not find improvements in conversational features such as better interruption handling.

42 Mathematicians Urge Royal Society to Warn Government and Media About AI Existential Risk

Forty-two mathematical fellows, including Fields Medal winners Martin Hairer, Peter Scholze, and Wendelin Werner, have signed an open letter urging the Royal Society to warn the UK government and media about existential risks from advanced AI. The letter follows recent breakthroughs in which leading models solved open research problems, including a Millennium Problem. None of the signatories are affiliated with AI companies. The group warns that AI labs' estimates of existential risk above ten percent must not be dismissed as hype, and that by the time the situation becomes obvious to the public, it may be too late to act.
