Three former Spotify engineers have launched Malachyte, an e-commerce personalization startup built on the same behavioral intelligence system that powers roughly 90% of Spotify's recommendations to its 800 million users. The company announced Thursday it has raised $10 million in seed funding.

The round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient, Google's AI-focused fund, with participation from Harpoon Ventures. Malachyte's founders, Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson, and Shivaditya Sinha, spent years at Spotify building the streaming platform's recommendation engine, a system called Vector AI.

Unlike traditional personalization tools that rely on past purchases or logged-in profiles, Vector AI predicts a person's intent and next actions. Malachyte has adapted that technology for online shopping, aiming to create real-time, intent-aware storefronts that respond to what a shopper is doing in the moment.

From music recommendations to product recommendations

Motwani, now Malachyte's CEO, said the team's time at Spotify shaped their approach to understanding user behavior. At Spotify, Vector AI became the backbone of the platform's recommendation system, handling the vast majority of what listeners hear next.

At Malachyte, the technology is reborn as a "two-headed Vector AI" for retail. One head predicts what product a shopper wants next. The other learns their general taste. Both fine-tune continuously based on real-time actions.

The system starts working before a visitor even clicks. "[Our] system starts forming before the first click, using the context available the moment the page loads. Within a single session, we build a real read on both preferences and what someone is trying to accomplish right now," Motwani said.

That means a search for "heavy-duty boot" followed by two clicks on steel-toed boots is enough to move work pants and gloves up the page and push dress shoes down. No account is required. No purchase history is needed.

Reading signals that most stores ignore

Most online stores treat shoppers the same way. Personalization is largely dictated by historical purchases, demographic segmentation, or logged-in customer profiles. First-time visitors often see the same generic storefront as everyone else. Existing shoppers receive recommendations based primarily on what they bought previously rather than what they need today.

Malachyte argues that retailers already possess their most valuable source of customer intelligence but rarely take advantage of it in real time. The company's platform treats every interaction as meaningful.

"Every hover, click, scroll, search refinement and add-to-cart is a signal, and most systems either never act on it in the moment or aggregate it into a segment overnight. We read it continuously, so each action makes the user's vector more confident about both preference and current intent," Motwani said.

Context matters, too. The system weighs when and how someone arrives at a store. "A phone visitor at 11 p.m. from an email link is in a different state of mind than the same person on a laptop mid-morning, and most systems treat them identically," Motwani said.

These contextual signals remain significantly underutilized across e-commerce, according to the company.

From testing to launch

Malachyte has been developing and testing its technology since 2024. The team worked with more than 20 enterprise customers across travel, grocery, and retail before narrowing its focus to e-commerce.

The platform first went live in fall 2025 with Fun.com, an online retailer. Since June 2026, the platform has been generally available to Shopify merchants through a native integration. Larger retailers can integrate the technology through Malachyte's API.

The funding will be used to scale distribution and hire more product and commercial leaders. The company did not disclose its valuation.

What's next for Malachyte

The seed round gives Malachyte runway to expand beyond its early customer base. With Shopify's native integration already live, the company is positioned to reach a broad swath of independent merchants. Its API opens the door to larger retailers with more complex needs.

The founders' track record at Spotify lends credibility. Vector AI's scale there, powering recommendations for hundreds of millions of users, suggests the underlying technology can handle heavy traffic and messy behavioral data.

Whether Malachyte can translate that success into retail remains to be seen. But the company's bet is clear: real-time intent, read continuously, will beat historical data every time.
