Google Pledges Up to $40 Billion in Anthropic

Google announced a commitment to invest as much as $40 billion in Anthropic on Friday. The AI startup is expanding quickly thanks to strong demand for its Claude Code software programming product.

The agreement marks another major funding move by tech leaders into leading AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic. Just last week, Amazon pledged up to $25 billion for Anthropic.

Investment Breakdown

Google plans to put in $10 billion in cash right away. This values Anthropic at $350 billion, matching its February valuation. The remaining $30 billion will come later, once Anthropic hits specific targets.

Both companies confirmed the deal but offered no additional details.

Anthropic started with support from Google and Amazon. Those firms now rank among its biggest minority shareholders. The startup depends on their cloud services to develop and operate its Claude chatbot and coding tools. It also counts as a top customer for their specialized AI hardware, including Google's tensor processing units, known as TPUs, and Amazon's Trainium chips.

Deepening Ties in AI Infrastructure

These partnerships show how investments flow in cycles during the AI surge fueling the US economy. Companies such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia pour billions into Anthropic and OpenAI. In return, the startups purchase vast amounts of chips and computing resources from them.

With this new deal, Google will supply Anthropic five gigawatts of computing power beginning in 2027. That amount equals the electricity needed for every home in Minnesota. Google stands ready to increase it if demand grows further.

This boost in resources will aid Anthropic in scaling up to handle rising needs for Claude Code. Businesses are adopting its coding and enterprise tools to create software and apps. The product's popularity has disrupted established software providers.

Revenue Surge and Market Position

Anthropic reported this month that its annual revenue run rate exceeds $30 billion. That figure rose from $9 billion at the close of 2025.

( The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, its partner, alleging copyright violations involving news content in AI systems. The companies deny the accusations. )

Google offers its own AI offerings. Gemini drives Google Search and supports a paid chatbot and research tool.

Still, backing Anthropic helps Google lock in customers for its cloud division. Google Cloud revenue climbed 36 percent last year to $58.7 billion.

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives including CEO Dario Amodei, specializes in safe and reliable AI systems. Its Claude models compete directly with top products from OpenAI and others. Google, part of Alphabet Inc., dominates online search and has built a major cloud business to rival Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

These investments highlight the intense competition and collaboration in AI development. Tech giants provide the infrastructure startups need, while gaining priority access to cutting-edge models.

The funding comes amid an AI arms race, where compute power and talent define leadership. Anthropic's growth reflects broader trends, with Claude Code gaining traction for enterprise coding tasks that once relied on traditional tools.
