New Models Target Performance and Security
Google introduced three new artificial intelligence models on Tuesday, stepping up its competition with rivals Anthropic and OpenAI. The lineup includes Gemini 3.6 Flash, described as the company's most powerful model to date, and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber, a version fine-tuned specifically for cybersecurity work.
The cybersecurity model is designed to find and patch security vulnerabilities at a lower cost than larger competing systems, according to Google. This move comes as Anthropic and OpenAI have made strides this year with their own AI systems capable of identifying software security flaws.
Performance and Pricing Improvements
Gemini Flash 3.6 builds on the capabilities of its predecessor, which performed strongly on benchmarks for coding and finance tasks, according to AI leaderboards. The new model also offers lower pricing for users, making it more accessible for developers and businesses.
Tulsee Doshi, a senior director of product management on Google's Gemini team, said in a statement that the new Flash models were built "to meet the sweet spot of efficiency and quality."

The third model, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, is designed for tasks such as managing AI "agents," which are bots that can act autonomously to function like digital personal assistants. This model targets lighter workloads where cost and speed are priorities.
Flagship Model Still Delayed
Google has also been developing a flagship AI model called Gemini 3.5 Pro, which is expected to be its highest performing system. The company said in May that Pro would roll out in June, but the model remains unavailable. Google stated that Pro is still in testing and will be made "broadly available as soon as it's ready."
Competitive Landscape
The releases come as Google faces increasing pressure from start-ups like OpenAI and Anthropic, which have gained attention with their own advanced models. The cybersecurity focus is particularly notable, as both rivals have pushed ahead with systems that can automatically identify vulnerabilities in software code.
