Meta has introduced its latest artificial intelligence tool, Muse Image, a new image generator built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company's dedicated AI research division.
The feature, which carried the internal code name Mango, is now available at no cost through the Meta AI app. Users can also access it within Instagram Stories and WhatsApp.
What Muse Can Do
Muse works similarly to other AI image generators on the market. People can create a variety of images, including many that are goofy or cartoonish in style.
For those who struggle to come up with original prompts, Meta said the tool comes with built in presets. These are prefabricated image prompts designed to spark ideas.
The model also supports prompt based image editing. Users can modify existing photos and then share the results across Meta's apps and platforms.
"Ask it to mock up an image of you in front of a historical landmark, cleanly erase a photobomber from the background of a shot, or write a custom prompt to build a functional QR code," the company said.

New Effects and Future Plans
Alongside the Muse generator, Meta is rolling out a set of new AI effects for Instagram Stories. These effects are powered by Muse and include customizable filters that can alter existing photos.
The company also confirmed that Muse Video, an AI video generator, is already in development. TechCrunch reached out to Meta for additional details about that project.
Meta's Broader AI Push
Muse is the latest in a series of AI products Meta has released over the past year. The company previously launched an assistant called Creator and an app called Pocket, which allows people to vibe code video games.
Meta has faced criticism for having what some describe as a nebulous AI strategy. Despite that, the company remains on track to spend heavily on AI infrastructure this year as it continues to expand its services.
