Microsoft Launches Agent Mode in Word, Excel, PowerPoint

"This meant Copilot was a passive partner in documents: it could answer questions but missed the mark when it was asked to take action on the canvas directly."

Early versions of Copilot focused on providing information rather than making changes. That approach stemmed from limits in the underlying AI models at the time. Microsoft designed the tool as a helpful sidekick for Office users, part of its broader push into AI-assisted productivity.

Microsoft 365, the subscription service that includes these apps, has long dominated office software markets.
