Microsoft announced Project Solara at its Build 2026 developer conference on Tuesday. The company described it as a new operating system designed from the ground up for gadgets that run AI agents. It is built on Android, not Windows.
A New OS for Agent Hardware
Project Solara is intended to power what Microsoft calls agent driven experiences. The company showed two concept devices at Build to illustrate the platform's possibilities.
The first concept is a desk device that looks similar to an Amazon Echo Show. It uses facial recognition to unlock and provides access to AI agents. The second concept is a wearable badge, the kind employees use to enter office buildings. This badge includes a camera and a fingerprint scanner. Users can press a button to wake an AI agent. Microsoft demonstrated tapping the badge to record a conversation and get an instant transcription. The camera also lets the agent see what the wearer sees.
Microsoft is not planning to ship either of these devices as commercial products. Instead, they are reference designs that the company hopes other hardware makers will turn into real products, according to GeekWire. Microsoft fellow Steven Bathiche said the platform is highly flexible.
Several companies have already signed on to pilot the hardware. AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS Healthcare, and Target are all planning to test the devices.

Microsoft chose to build Project Solara on a version of Android called the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform. The company decided against using Windows for this project. According to GeekWire, Microsoft picked Android because it can run on smaller, lower power devices while still offering the management and security features that IT departments expect.
This marks an interesting choice for Microsoft, which has long relied on Windows as its core operating system for computing devices. The decision highlights the growing need for lightweight operating systems tailored to specialized AI hardware.
Early Stage but Growing Competition
Project Solara is still in its early stages. Microsoft is positioning itself to enter the AI hardware market as competition intensifies. Traditional rivals Google and Meta are both developing their own AI gadgets. OpenAI is also working on devices in partnership with former Apple designer Jony Ive.
Microsoft's approach with reference designs mirrors its strategy with past hardware initiatives such as the Surface line. The company often creates its own devices to showcase what is possible and then encourages other manufacturers to build their own versions.
The announcement came during Microsoft Build 2026, the company's annual developer event. This year's conference has focused heavily on AI agents and new hardware form factors. Project Solara represents Microsoft's bet that dedicated devices for AI agents will become an important category in the coming years.
