OpenAI released a preview of its ChatGPT desktop app for Linux on Tuesday, bundling ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the Codex coding agent into a single package. The move extends the company's native desktop push to a platform long favored by developers, though the preview ships without some key features found elsewhere.
What the Linux App Includes
The app arrives as both .deb and .rpm packages, covering the major Linux package formats. It supports x64 and ARM64 architectures, giving users on both common and newer hardware a path to install it. The supported distributions are Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, Fedora 43, and Fedora 44.
Inside the package, users get ChatGPT, the work-focused ChatGPT Work variant, and Codex, OpenAI's AI coding agent. The app also includes a built-in browser, Chrome extensions, and voice control. That combination positions the release as a full workspace tool rather than a simple chat client.
Missing Native Computer Use
One notable gap stands out. Native computer use is not included in the Linux preview. That means controlling desktop apps like GIMP or OpenOffice is not possible yet. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the missing features.
Appshots, Record & Replay, and voice commands for desktop apps will not be available at launch. These tools, which let the assistant interact with on-screen elements and replay actions, remain absent from this initial Linux build. The spokesperson did not say when they might arrive.

The Linux release follows the Mac and Windows versions of the ChatGPT desktop app, which shipped in July. For Linux users, however, some capabilities already existed. Codex CLI and an IDE extension worked on Linux before this release, giving terminal-based developers a head start.
