OpenAI Releases GPT-5.5 Closer to Super App Goal
OpenAI unveiled GPT-5.5 on Thursday. Company officials describe it as their most intelligent and user-friendly AI model so far. This release boosts performance across various tasks. OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman stated it moves the firm nearer to building a super app.
During a media briefing, Brockman described the upgrade as a major push toward agentic and intuitive systems. He noted, "This model is a real step forward towards the kind of computing that we expect in the future, but it is one step, and we expect to see many in the future." Brockman added, "It's a faster, sharper thinker for fewer tokens compared to something like 5.4. So this means that there's just more frontier AI available for businesses and for consumers, which is part of our goal."
Progress on the Super App Vision
Brockman highlighted how GPT-5.5 supports the super app idea. He and co-founder Sam Altman have talked about this before. They picture a single platform merging ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI browser to serve enterprise needs. Such a tool would act like a versatile all-in-one program. Elon Musk, a rival to Altman and former OpenAI board member, shares interest in super apps. Musk aims to make X a similar comprehensive service.
OpenAI moves quickly with releases. The prior model came out just last month. Before that, one appeared in December and another in November. Staff expect this rhythm to persist. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki remarked, "We see pretty significant improvements in the short term, extremely significant improvements in the medium term." He continued, "In fact, I would say, like, I think the last two years have been surprisingly slow."
OpenAI started in 2015 as a nonprofit lab seeking artificial general intelligence. Sam Altman became CEO in 2019 after leading Y Combinator. GPT-5.5 works well in core enterprise tasks like agentic coding and knowledge handling. It also shines in math and scientific research. OpenAI shared benchmark results on Thursday. The model outperforms its predecessors. It also tops Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro and Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.5 in most tests.
Competition with Anthropic stays intense. A journalist asked if GPT-5.5 matches Mythos, Anthropic's new cybersecurity product. Mythos faced issues after reports of unauthorized access. OpenAI technical staff member Mia Glaese replied that GPT-5.5 strengthens their cybersecurity efforts. She said, "We have a strong and longstanding strategy for our approach to cyber, and we've refined a durable approach to rolling out models safely."
Chief research officer Mark Chen praised GPT-5.5 for better computer navigation than earlier versions. He pointed to solid advances in scientific and technical workflows. Chen believes it can aid expert scientists in breakthroughs. He mentioned potential in drug discovery, a field gaining traction lately.

Users can access GPT-5.5 from Thursday. It reaches Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers via ChatGPT. The 5.5 Pro version goes to Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers.
OpenAI's rapid pace reflects the AI sector's push. Rivals like Anthropic, founded by ex-OpenAI staff including Dario Amodei, and Google DeepMind compete fiercely. Elon Musk left OpenAI in 2018 and now runs xAI while owning X.
