OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Personal Finance Tools

OpenAI released new personal finance capabilities on Friday. These tools appear in preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers located in the United States. People can link their bank accounts and pose queries about spending reviews or long-term money strategies.

Partnership with Plaid and Account Access

The company teamed up with Plaid, a service that handles financial account links. This setup allows connections to more than 12,000 institutions. Examples include Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. After linking, a dashboard displays portfolio results, spending patterns, subscriptions, and payments due soon.

OpenAI, founded in 2015 as an AI research organization by figures like Sam Altman, has built ChatGPT into a widely used conversational AI since its 2022 debut. ChatGPT Pro represents a premium subscription tier offering advanced access to models and features. Plaid, established in 2013, provides secure APIs that power many fintech applications by bridging user banks and third-party services.

Connection to Recent Acquisition

This launch arrived one month after OpenAI bought the team from personal finance startup Hiro in April. Hiro had received funding from investors such as Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive. OpenAI noted the value of the Hiro team's finance knowledge for this product. The firm did not clarify if the full feature stemmed from their work alone.

How Users Access the Features

Subscribers reach the tool through the "Get started" button under the "Finances" section in the sidebar. They can also type "@Finances, connect my accounts" during a ChatGPT chat. The bot then directs them to connect via Plaid. OpenAI plans to add Intuit support shortly. That addition will cover topics like tax effects from stock sales or chances of credit card approval.

More than 200 million users query ChatGPT about finances each month, according to OpenAI. The firm highlighted strengths in the new GPT-5.5 model for handling context in reasoning tasks, vital for money matters. OpenAI collaborated with finance specialists to develop a benchmark that boosts performance on such questions.

With account links active, users receive in-depth replies to prompts like "I feel like I've been spending more recently. Has anything changed?" or "Help me build a plan to be ready to buy a house in my area in the next 5 years."

Data Management and Privacy Controls

Users manage connections via Settings > Apps > Finances to unlink specific accounts. Synced information deletes from ChatGPT after 30 days upon disconnection. Financial memories can also be reviewed and erased from the Finances page.

Broad chatbots field questions on sensitive areas like health, finance, and personal matters. AI firms now create targeted offerings for these fields. OpenAI and Anthropic offer health-focused tools. Perplexity introduced a financial research product this month using its Computer agent.

Availability and Next Steps

These finance tools work on ChatGPT web and iOS apps for Pro users. OpenAI intends to refine them based on Pro feedback before extending to Plus subscribers.
