OpenAI Launches Workspace Agents in ChatGPT
OpenAI rolled out workspace agents for ChatGPT on April 22, 2026. Powered by Codex, these agents manage complex, multi-step tasks for teams on their own. They mark an advance over earlier custom GPT directory, which remain available. A conversion tool for turning custom GPTs into workspace agents is under development.
Agents Designed for Team Workflows
Unlike standard GPTs focused on single users, workspace agents suit group efforts. They gather information from various systems, adhere to team processes, seek approvals, and advance work across tools. Each agent uses its own dedicated space equipped with files, code, tools, and ongoing memory. This setup lets agents produce and execute code, connect to applications, hold details between sessions, and tackle tasks with multiple stages.
Teams can schedule agents or link them to Slack for automatic request handling. OpenAI, the AI research organization founded in 2015 and creator of the widely used ChatGPT launched in late 2022, positions these as an evolution. Codex, OpenAI's code generation model, runs the agents in the cloud, so they continue operating without user input.
Quick Setup with Templates
Creating a workspace agent takes little time. Users outline a repeated process or provide a file, and ChatGPT assembles the agent by outlining steps, linking tools, incorporating abilities, and running tests. Ready templates exist for areas like finance, sales, and marketing.
OpenAI provided internal examples. The "Software Reviewer" examines staff requests for software against approved lists and rules, then generates IT tickets as required. A "Product Feedback Router" monitors Slack, support areas, and public discussions to convert input into ranked tickets and weekly overviews. The "Weekly Metrics Reporter" collects data each Friday, makes charts, and distributes team reports. A "Lead Outreach Agent" studies new leads, rates them, composes custom follow-up messages, and refreshes the CRM.
OpenAI's sales group employs an agent that extracts data from call records and account studies, evaluates prospects, and places email drafts in salespeople's inboxes. The accounting unit created one for portions of monthly closings, including journal entries, balance sheet checks, and difference reviews.

Turning Knowledge into Workflows
Company information often scatters across staff and platforms. Workspace agents collect this into repeatable processes that apply correct steps and tools. With memory and the option for mid-task corrections, agents improve through repeated use. Teams construct one agent, adjust it gradually, and then copy or share it for other needs.
Management and Security Features
A new Agents tab in the ChatGPT sidebar handles discovery and oversight. Interaction happens in ChatGPT and Slack for now, with additional connections planned. Users set tool and data access for each agent, plus requirements for approvals on actions like emailing or scheduling. Usage analytics track shared agent activity.
Enterprise and Edu administrators use role-based settings to decide which groups can build and distribute agents, along with allowed tools. Built-in protections prevent prompt injection attacks. The Compliance API enables monitoring, and agents can pause if issues arise. Further information appears in the OpenAI Academy and Help Center.
Availability and Pricing
The Research Preview targets ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans. Enterprise and Edu admins activate it via role controls. Access stays free through May 6, 2026, followed by credit-based charges.
