The same month SpaceX priced Cursor, junior software developer employment logged its 33rd consecutive month of decline. Stanford's Digital Economy Lab, using ADP payroll data covering millions of US workers, found employment in AI-exposed occupations for workers aged 22 to 25 fell 4.3% year over year in June. That contraction began in October 2023.
Indeed Hiring Lab found US tech job postings down 36% from February 2020 levels. Entry-level postings dropped 25% year over year in 2024. A SHRM survey found 70% of hiring managers believe AI can do the work of an intern.
SignalFire's 2026 State of Talent report found entry-level hiring down roughly 65% at major tech companies and 76% at early-stage startups compared with 2019. The firm warns that companies cutting junior pipelines are trading short-term margin for a leadership shortage within five to ten years.
Not everyone is following the trend. IBM announced plans to triple US entry-level hiring in 2026. The company argues junior engineers are shifting to customer-facing and judgment work that AI cannot handle.
From Vibe Coding to Judgment
The frontier has moved. Andrej Karpathy, the AI researcher who popularized the term vibe coding, called it passé in February. He noted the shift toward agents that plan, test, and self-correct across entire codebases.
