3-Citric Acid Cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle or TCA cycle): Acetyl-CoA enters the citric acid cycle, which takes place in the mitochondria. During this cycle, the acetyl-CoA is oxidized, releasing energy in the form of ATP, NADH, FADH2 (flavin adenine dinucleotide), and carbon dioxide.

4-Electron Transport Chain (ETC): The NADH and FADH2 generated in the previous steps donate their electrons to the electron transport chain, which is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane. The electron transport chain uses these electrons to create a proton gradient, which drives the synthesis of ATP through a process called oxidative phosphorylation. Oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor, combining with hydrogen ions (protons) to form water.
