Function analysis: Function analysis demonstrates the connections or relationships among multiple subsystems (components of the Engineering System) detailed in figure 1. These connections are referred to as functions, defined as actions between two or more components. Functions are categorized into two primary types: useful functions and harmful functions. Useful functions encompass "normal," "insufficient," and "excessive" functionalities. Harmful, excessive or insufficient functions require acute attentions to details.

Cause and effect chain analysis (CECA): CECA assists in pinpointing the specific root cause(s) linked to the problem. CECA follows a systematic approach by continuously asking "why?" to uncover causes, progressing from higher-level to lower-level causes.

Engineering Contradiction (EC) and contradiction matrix: The best solutions emerge when an engineer or inventor addresses a technical problem that holds a contradiction within it [9]. An Engineering Contradiction occurs when improving one aspect or parameter of a technical system causes another aspect or parameter within the same system to worsen. These engineering contradictions are discerned through analyzing cause-and-effect chains and are an intrinsic part of resolving inventive issues.

Physical contradiction: In the Physical Contradiction of an engineering system, there is only one controlling parameter (e.g. area, length, volume, etc.) which has a contradiction at two different values. For example, a cup of coffee needs to be hot to drink and cold outside the cup for not burning a hand. The core of a Physical Contradiction lies in identifying the controlling parameter. Resolving a Physical Contradiction can involve methods like By-Separation (in Space, Time, Relation, System level), By-Satisfaction, and Bypass.
