Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to a server?+
No. The entire tool runs in your browser using the HTML canvas — your image is loaded locally, processed on your device, and never sent anywhere. That makes it safe to use with private or unpublished photos.
How does the background removal work?+
The tool samples the corners and edges of your image to detect the background color, then makes every pixel within your chosen color tolerance transparent. Pixels near the threshold get partial transparency, and an optional smoothing pass softens the edges. It is a color-based algorithm, not a neural network.
What kinds of images work best?+
Images with solid or gently gradient backgrounds — product photos, logos, and portraits shot against a plain backdrop. If the subject shares colors with the background or the scene is busy, a color-based approach will struggle; neural models like rembg or BRIA handle those cases better.
What do the tolerance and edge smoothing settings do?+
Color tolerance controls how different a pixel can be from the detected background color and still be removed — raise it if background remains, lower it if parts of your subject disappear. Edge smoothing applies up to three blur passes on the transparency channel to soften jagged cutout edges.
What format is the downloaded image?+
You get a PNG with a transparent background at the original resolution of your image, with no watermark. PNG is the right format for transparency; if you re-export to JPG elsewhere, the transparent areas will become a solid color.
Is the tool really free?+
Yes. There is no signup, no watermark, and no usage limit. Because processing happens on your own device, it costs us nothing per image, so there is no paid tier to push you toward.
