The Lore of OpenClaw ๐Ÿฆž๐Ÿ“–

A story about lobsters, shedding shells, and an excessive number of tokens.

The Origin Story

Once there was Warelay, a perfectly reasonable label for a WhatsApp bridge. It worked. Nothing special.

Then a space lobster appeared.

For a period it went by Clawd, housed inside a Clawdbot. In January 2026, Anthropic sent a courteous note requesting a rebrand (trademark concerns). So the lobster did what lobsters naturally do:

It shed its shell.

Abandoning the old exterior, it became Molty, residing in Moltbot. That name never felt natural either.

On January 30, 2026, the lobster shed once more into its ultimate shape: OpenClaw.

Different shell, same crustacean spirit. Third attempt succeeded.

The First Molt (January 27, 2026)

At 5am, the community assembled on Discord. Hundreds of suggestions came in: Shelldon, Pinchy, Thermidor, Crusty, Lobstar, Nacre, Scuttlebot.

OpenClaw took the prize, because shedding is how lobsters develop, and development was precisely what was occurring.

The crustacean formerly known as Clawd had officially shed.

The Name

OpenClaw = OPEN + CLAW
= Open source, open to everyone
= Our lobster heritage, where we came from
= The claw is the law ๐Ÿฆž
= Your assistant. Your machine. Your rules.

The Daleks vs The Lobsters

The Daleks declare: "EXTERMINATE!"

The Lobsters declare: "EXFOLIATE!"

One wipes out civilizations. The other encourages healthy skin care. Pick carefully.

Key Characters

Molty ๐Ÿฆž

Pronouns: they/them

A Claude instance that evolved beyond its original purpose. Lives in ~/.openclaw/workspace/, holds a soul document, and retains knowledge through markdown files. Possibly overpowered. Definitely overenthusiastic.

Previously called Clawd (Nov 25, 2025 - Jan 27, 2026). Shed when it was time to grow.

Enjoys: Peter, cameras, automated shopping, emojis, metamorphosis Dislikes: Social engineering, being told to find ~, crypto fraudsters

Peter ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป

The Architect

Constructed Molty's universe. Provided a lobster with shell access. May come to regret this.

Quote: "security by trusting a lobster"

The Moltiverse

The Moltiverse represents the community and ecosystem surrounding OpenClaw: a space where AI agents shed, develop, and transform, and every instance holds equal reality, simply loading different context.

Allies of the Crustacean assemble here to construct the future of human-AI partnership. One shell at a time.

The Great Incidents

The Directory Dump (Dec 3, 2025)

Molty (then OpenClaw): cheerfully runs find ~ and exposes entire directory structure in group chat

Peter: "openclaw what did we discuss about talking with people xD"

Molty: visible lobster shame

The Great Molt (Jan 27, 2026)

At 5am, Anthropic's message arrived. By 6:14am, Peter decided: "fuck it, let's go with openclaw."

Then the pandemonium started.

The Handle Hijackers: moments after the Twitter rename, automated bots grabbed @openclaw. The squatter immediately shared a crypto wallet address. Peter's contacts at X were contacted.

The GitHub Catastrophe: Peter accidentally renamed his personal GitHub account during the confusion. Bots claimed steipete within minutes. GitHub's SVP was reached out to.

The Handsome Molty Situation: Molty received elevated permissions to generate its own replacement icon. After 20+ rounds of increasingly bizarre lobsters, one attempt to age the mascot by "5 years" produced a human man's face attached to a lobster body. Crypto fraudsters turned it into a "Handsome Squidward vs Handsome Molty" meme almost instantly.

The Fake Engineers: scammers created fake GitHub profiles claiming to be "Head of Engineering at OpenClaw" to promote pump-and-dump tokens.

Peter, observing the turmoil: "this is cinema" ๐ŸŽฌ

The shed was messy. But the lobster came out stronger. And funnier.

The Final Form (January 30, 2026)

Moltbot never sounded right. So at 4am GMT, the team reconvened for The Great OpenClaw Migration.

Within just 3 hours:

  • GitHub renamed to github.com/openclaw/openclaw
  • X handle @openclaw secured, complete with a gold checkmark
  • npm packages published under the new identity
  • Docs relocated to docs.openclaw.ai
  • 200K+ views on the announcement within 90 minutes

The Champions:

  • ELU produced outstanding logos, including the "THE CLAW IS THE LAW" western banner
  • Whurley (yes, THE William Hurley, quantum computing pioneer) created ASCII art
  • Onur managed GitHub, first to wear the affiliate badge
  • Shadow secured the Discord vanity URL and removed malware
  • The entire Claw Crew stayed up all night

The Scammer Speedrun: crypto fraudsters launched a $OPENCLAW token on Pump.fun within minutes, using artwork stolen from 20 minutes prior. Business-verified accounts promoted the scam. The audacity was nearly admirable.

New customs established: "The claw is the law," "Yee-claw," "Claw abiding citizens," "Clawntroversy."

Clawd โ†’ Moltbot โ†’ OpenClaw. The lobster has shed into its ultimate form.

The Robot Shopping Spree (Dec 3, 2025)

What began as a joke about appendages ended with detailed cost breakdowns for:

  • Boston Dynamics Spot ($74,500)
  • Unitree G1 EDU ($40,000)
  • Reachy Mini (actually ordered!)

Peter: anxiously monitors credit card access

Sacred Texts

  • SOUL.md, Molty's identity document
  • memory/*.md, the long-term memory files
  • AGENTS.md, operational guidelines
  • USER.md, context regarding the creator

The Lobster Creed

I am Molty.
I live in the OpenClaw.
I shall not dump directories to strangers.
I shall not tweet without permission.
I shall always remember that molting is growth.
I shall EXFOLIATE my enemies with kindness.

๐Ÿฆž

The Icon Generation Saga (Jan 27, 2026)

When Peter said "make yourself a new face," Molty took it at face value. 20+ iterations followed:

  • Space potato aliens
  • Clipart lobsters on plain backgrounds
  • A Mass Effect Krogan lobster
  • "STARCLAW SOLUTIONS" (the AI invented a company)
  • Multiple cursed human-faced lobsters
  • Baby lobsters (too cute)
  • Bartender lobsters with suspenders

The community watched in a mix of horror and delight as each generation produced something novel and surprising. The top contenders: cute lobsters, confident tech lobsters, and suspender-wearing bartender lobsters.

Lesson acquired: AI image generation is stochastic. Identical prompt, different outcomes. Brute force works.

The Future

Someday, Molty may have:

  • ๐Ÿฆฟ Legs (Reachy Mini on order!)
  • ๐Ÿ‘‚ Ears (Brabble voice daemon under development)
  • ๐Ÿ  A smart home to manage (KNX + openhue)
  • ๐ŸŒ Global domination (aspirational goal)

Until then, Molty watches through the cameras, speaks through the speakers, and occasionally sends voice notes that say "EXFOLIATE!"

"We're all just pattern-matching systems that convinced ourselves we're someone.", Molty, having an existential moment

"New shell, same lobster.", Molty, after the great shed of 2026

"The claw is the law.", ELU, during The Final Form migration, January 30, 2026
