This skill runs an automated verification pipeline before code lands. It performs static scans, baseline-aware quality gates, an independent reviewer subagent, and an auto-fix loop. You would reach for this when you want a second pair of eyes on your changes without leaving the terminal, especially before git commit or git push.

What it does

The skill enforces a core principle: no agent should verify its own work. Fresh context finds what you miss. It takes your staged changes, runs a security scan on added lines, checks for regressions against a baseline, dispatches an independent reviewer subagent, and optionally auto-fixes issues. The whole pipeline is designed to catch problems before they reach the repository.

Before you start

  • You need a git repository with staged changes (git add).
  • The skill is bundled with Hermes Agent (installed by default).
  • It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows.
  • The delegate_task function must be available in your environment. It is NOT available inside execute_code or scripts.
  • For baseline tests and linting, the relevant tools (pytest, npm, cargo, go, ruff, mypy, eslint, tsc, clippy, go vet) should be installed for your project. If a tool is not found, that check is skipped silently.
  • Large diffs (over 15,000 characters) are split by file to keep the reviewer focused.

Step 1, Get the diff

If empty, try git diff then git diff HEAD~1 HEAD.

If git diff --cached is empty but git diff shows changes, tell the user to git add first. If still empty, run git status, nothing to verify.

If the diff exceeds 15,000 characters, split by file:

Scan added lines only. Any match is a security concern fed into Step 5.

Step 3, Baseline tests and linting

Detect the project language and run the appropriate tools. Capture the failure count BEFORE your changes as baseline_failures (stash changes, run, pop). Only NEW failures introduced by your changes block the commit.

Baseline comparison: If baseline was clean and your changes introduce failures, that's a regression. If baseline already had failures, only count NEW ones.

Step 4, Self-review checklist

Quick scan before dispatching the reviewer:

  • No hardcoded secrets, API keys, or credentials
  • Input validation on user-provided data
  • SQL queries use parameterized statements
  • File operations validate paths (no traversal)
  • External calls have error handling (try/catch)
  • No debug print/console.log left behind
  • No commented-out code
  • New code has tests (if test suite exists)

Step 5, Independent reviewer subagent

Call delegate_task directly, it is NOT available inside execute_code or scripts.

The reviewer gets ONLY the diff and static scan results. No shared context with the implementer. Fail-closed: unparseable response = fail.

When not to use it

Skip this skill for documentation-only changes, pure config tweaks, or when the user explicitly says "skip verification". It is also not a replacement for github-code-review, which reviews other people's pull requests on GitHub with inline comments. This skill verifies your own changes before committing.

Limits and gotchas

  • Empty diff: Check git status, tell the user nothing to verify.
  • Not a git repo: Skip and tell the user.
  • Large diff (>15k chars): Split by file, review each separately.
  • delegate_task returns non-JSON: Retry once with a stricter prompt, then treat as FAIL.
  • False positives: If the reviewer flags something intentional, note it in the fix prompt.
  • No test framework found: Skip the regression check; the reviewer verdict still runs.
  • Lint tools not installed: Skip that check silently; don't fail.
  • Auto-fix introduces new issues: Counts as a new failure; the cycle continues.
