What This Skill Does
Command-line tool to download ERA5 single-level reanalysis climate data from Microsoft Planetary Computer. Supports temperature, precipitation, wind, pressure, and other variables with spatial subsetting via bounding box, no API key required.
Eliminates the need for Copernicus API registration and authentication by pulling ERA5 data directly from Microsoft Planetary Computer's STAC catalog.
When to Use It
- Download historical temperature data for a specific region and time period
- Retrieve precipitation records for climate analysis or hydrology modeling
- Extract wind speed components (u/v at 10m or 100m) for renewable energy site assessment
- Get sea surface temperature or pressure data for oceanographic research
- Batch download multiple climate variables for a custom bounding box area

Data Source
Uses Microsoft Planetary Computer STAC API:
- Endpoint:
https://planetarycomputer.microsoft.com/api/stac/v1 - Collection:
era5-pds - Format: Zarr (cloud-optimized)
- License: Copernicus ERA5 data license (free for research and commercial use)
No authentication or API key is required.
Requirements
- Python 3.8+
- requests
- xarray (optional, for full NetCDF export)
- zarr (optional, for reading cloud-optimized data)
Installation
pip install -r requirements.txt
How It Works
- Searches Planetary Computer STAC catalog for ERA5 items matching your variable and date range
- Downloads Zarr-format data chunks
- Converts and merges into a single NetCDF file
- Supports spatial subsetting via
--bbox - Uses
.parttemp files for safe writes (atomic rename on completion)
Safety
- Safe file writes: downloads to
.parttemp file, renames on completion - No API keys or credentials stored or transmitted
- HTTPS-only data source
- Input validation on all parameters
