What This Skill Does

Downloads global land cover data from ESA WorldCover (10m), FROM-GLC (30m), and GlobeLand30 (30m) via a command-line interface. Supports STAC search, bounding box subsetting, year selection, and progress tracking with no API keys required.

Replaces manually downloading and wrangling land cover rasters from multiple government and research portals by providing a single CLI with STAC search and bbox filtering.

When to Use It

  • Download ESA WorldCover tiles for a specific region and year
  • Search available FROM-GLC or GlobeLand30 tiles within a bounding box
  • List all land cover classification values before analysis
  • Batch download multiple land cover datasets for a study area
  • Retrieve 10m or 30m land cover data for temporal change detection

Global Land Cover Downloader

A powerful tool for downloading global land cover data from multiple sources.

Features

  • Multi-Dataset Support: ESA WorldCover (10m), FROM-GLC (30m), GlobeLand30 (30m)
  • STAC Integration: Uses Planetary Computer STAC API for ESA WorldCover
  • Regional Download: Support bbox for area-of-interest selection
  • Year Selection: Choose data year for temporal analysis
  • Progress Tracking: Visual progress bar with ETA
  • Safe Downloads: .part file pattern prevents incomplete downloads
  • No API Keys: All data sources are public and free

Usage

Basic Search

# Search ESA WorldCover tiles for a region
python landcover-download.py \
    --dataset worldcover \
    --bbox 116.0 39.0 117.0 40.0

Download Data

# Download WorldCover tiles
python landcover-download.py \
    --dataset worldcover \
    --bbox 116.0 39.0 117.0 40.0 \
