Financial services company Stripe revealed a new digital wallet called Link during its annual conference. Link lets users connect multiple payment options and allows AI agents to handle spending with user oversight for security.

Standard Wallet Capabilities

Link functions across web, iOS, and Android platforms. Users add payment methods like credit cards, bank accounts, cryptocurrency wallets, and buy now pay later options. It also saves key details for faster online checkouts, including billing addresses and shipping information.

Beyond basics, the wallet helps track personal spending patterns. It lists recurring subscriptions and enables updates to payment details stored by those services when necessary. Eligible purchases from certain merchants come with 90 days of purchase protection.

Stripe, founded in 2010 by brothers Patrick and John Collison, has long served as a key payment processor for online businesses worldwide. The company handles billions in transactions annually and powers commerce for platforms from startups to giants like Amazon and Shopify.

Users start by granting agent access through an OAuth authentication process. The agent then submits a spend request with full context and awaits approval. Right now, it handles standard payment types. Stripe plans to add agentic tokens, stablecoins, and more payment forms soon.

On mobile devices or the web, owners receive notifications to review spend requests before any payment details reach the agent. Stripe intends to add user-defined spending limits and options for agents to proceed without prior approval in the future.

Link relies on Stripe's recent Issuing for agents platform. This allows creation of virtual cards for agents, complete with instant authorizations, spending restrictions, and clear transaction logs. Users avoid sharing personal credentials by providing programmatic Link access, which generates one-time-use cards. Another choice is the Shared Payment Token, or SPT, supported by cards and bank accounts.

Those creating AI agents or personal assistants can adopt Link's wallet features. This saves them from developing custom payment systems from the ground up, according to Stripe.
