Yelp Upgrades AI Assistant Chatbot for Bookings

Yelp has launched a substantial update to its AI-powered chatbot, known as Yelp Assistant. This change aims to transform the tool into a digital concierge capable of managing tasks directly. Users can now expect it to respond to queries, suggest options, and complete bookings all within one chat session.

The company states its goal is for people to search less and take more actions through the bot. This upgrade follows the chatbot's initial release in 2024, when it focused mainly on connecting users with service professionals for hires. Yelp, founded in 2004, has long served as a platform for consumer reviews of local businesses, restaurants, and services across millions of listings.

Central Role in the App

Yelp plans to place the Assistant at the heart of its app experience. A new dedicated "Assistant" tab will appear across all categories on the platform. This makes the bot accessible for a wide range of needs, from dining to services.

The update comes amid several AI enhancements Yelp has introduced in recent months. It reflects a larger trend in the industry, where companies seek to make AI tools more practical for everyday users. Businesses leverage vast collections of customer reviews and data to offer tailored assistance and gain an advantage over competitors.

Key Integrations for Actions

The enhanced Assistant connects with various third-party services to perform real tasks. Users can place orders for takeout or delivery via DoorDash and Grubhub. For local pros, it requests quotes in fields like auto repair and pet care.

Bookings for beauty treatments, wellness sessions, fitness classes, and healthcare visits happen through Vagaro and Zocdoc. DoorDash, a major player in food delivery since its founding in 2013, and Grubhub, established in 2004, expand food options. Vagaro handles salon and fitness scheduling, while Zocdoc focuses on doctor appointments.

Support for Yelp Waitlist arrives soon, allowing table reservations. Calendly integration for general scheduling follows shortly after. These additions turn recommendations into completed actions without leaving the conversation.

Leadership on the Update

Craig Saldanha, chief product officer at Yelp, called this the company's most significant AI product change to date. He noted it marks just the start of a shift toward a more conversational, customized, and task-focused experience on the platform.

Yelp continues to build on its core strength: user-generated content from over 200 million reviews. By embedding AI deeply, it aims to keep users engaged longer and drive more business transactions through the app.

This development positions Yelp to compete in a market where AI assistants from companies like Google and OpenAI handle similar consumer tasks. Yet Yelp's focus remains tied to its local discovery roots.
